Staphylococcus aureus on Schaedler agar. Colonies are surrounded by a wide zone of beta-hemolysis.
Cultivation 48 hours, anaerobic atmosphere, 37°C.

Staphylococci grow best aerobically, but are facultatively anaerobic (unlike strictly anaerobic bacteria, e.g. Clostridium spp.), are able to grow in air as well as in an atmosphere without oxygen.
